Prague’s Daring Dame: The Hotel Central
Prague, 1901. A city of soaring Gothic spires and grand Baroque palaces. Then, something new appeared. Something… different. On Hybernská street, a building bloomed into existence, its facade a swirl of pastel colours and floral motifs. This was the Hotel Central, and it was about to change Prague forever.
A Bold Statement in a City of Tradition
Imagine walking through Prague at the turn of the 20th century. The city’s skyline was a familiar and beloved silhouette, dominated by the majestic spires of St. Vitus Cathedral and the sturdy Charles Bridge towers. Then, in 19011 2, on the bustling Hybernská street, a new building emerged that broke all the old rules. This was the Hotel Central, and it was a shock to the system.

Hybernská has always been a bustling thoroughfare. At one end, there’s Prague famed Powder Tower – one of the gates into the Old Town, and start of the Royal Route.
Designed by the Austrian architect Friedrich Ohmann3 4 5 6 7, the Hotel Central was one of Prague’s first buildings designed in the Art Nouveau style8 9. Its pastel-coloured facade was adorned with sculpted floral motifs10 11, a stark contrast to the stone and plaster of its neighbours. The hotel’s lettering, designed by Ohmann himself, was a work of art, a flowing, organic script that announced the arrival of a new aesthetic12.
But how did the people of Prague react to this new style? While there are no detailed contemporary accounts of a public outcry, the Art Nouveau movement was certainly a topic of heated debate. In Central Europe culture snobs called it the “Secession”. It was a style that broke from the historical traditions that had defined Prague for centuries. The artists and architects of the Art Nouveau movement were deliberately turning their backs on the past, seeking a new, modern form of expression.
The Hotel Central, then, was not just a new hotel. It was a manifesto. It was a bold declaration that Prague was a modern city, ready to embrace the new and the innovative.

A Ripple Effect Through the City of a Hundred Spires
The Hotel Central did not remain an isolated curiosity for long. Its daring design sent ripples through Prague’s architectural scene, inspiring a new wave of Art Nouveau buildings. Ohmann, a professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, influenced a generation of Czech architects. This included his own students Alois Dryák and Bedřich Bendelmayer, who helped complete the hotel13.
Soon, the swirling, organic forms of Art Nouveau began to appear on other buildings. The nearby Municipal House, though a blend of styles, is full of Art Nouveau elements. The Grand Hotel Evropa on Wenceslas Square, with its ornate facade, is another stunning example of the style’s growing popularity.
You can still see the influence of the Hotel Central, and the Art Nouveau movement, in Prague today. From decorative ironwork on balconies to stained-glass windows in doorways, the legacy of this artistic revolution is part of the fabric of the city.
A Stage for History: Famous Guests and a Theatrical Past
The Hotel Central soon became a hub of Prague’s cultural and social life. Its guestbook reads like a who’s who of the early 20th century. In 1902, the famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin stayed at the hotel during his visit to Prague14 15. The writer Franz Kafka was also a frequent visitor16.

Kafka also used to meet Albert Einstein in the nearby Stone Lamb house. There’s no record of Einstein having been at the Hotel Central but, given its popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising.
But the Hotel Central was more than just a place for the rich and famous to rest their heads. In the 1920s and 30s, the hotel’s grand hall became a cabaret theatre17. By all accounts, it was a lively venue hosting some of Prague’s most popular performers.
From Decay to Rebirth: The Hotel Central Today
Like many historical buildings, the hotel fell into disrepair during the Communist era18. In the early 2000s, the K+K Hotels group bought it and gave it a new lease on life. The building underwent a comprehensive renovation, which it needed. This was a delicate balancing act of preserving its unique artistic features while updating it with modern amenities.
The result is a hotel19 that is both a historical treasure and a comfortable, modern retreat. The stunning Art Nouveau staircase and lift have been beautifully restored, and the former theatre, with its vaulted glass ceiling, now serves as the hotel’s breakfast room20.
So, the next time you find yourself in Prague, take a stroll down Hybernská street. Look for the building with the pastel facade and the swirling floral motifs. It’s more than just a hotel. It’s a piece of history, a work of art, and a symbol of a city that dared to be different.
