Archives: Solo Items

Solo activities like books, TV series or films to enjoy in your own company

The Hiding Place

As expats, most of us are here because we chose to be. Previous emigrants couldn't always say that. Trezza Azzopardi's debut novel follows a family of Maltese migrants in Cardiff as told by the youngest child.

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair

Quentin Tarantino re-released his masterpiece, Kill Bill, as a single film together with unseen footage for fans of 21st century cinema. It's an amazing love letter to cinema, tropes, and classics from a previous generation

Scarpetta

Amazon has moved away from what looked like a crowd-funded approach to TV programming. It's latest all-star series is the amusingly-named Scarpetta (Who comes up with these names?). Staring Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman, the story spans 3 timelines keeping us on the edge of our seats.

The Best of A. A. Gill

His accolodaes as one of the finest British journalists of his time are well-earned. I have fond memories of actively searching for his columns and reports in the newspapers. Between his unusual way of looking at things, and his beautiful prose, A A Gill was a master at making you laugh, or at plucking at your heart strings.

Reminders of him

It seems like author Colleen Hoover is everyone's favourite. I enjoyed the adaptation of her "It ends with us" a few years back, and that's what drew me to Reminders of Him. There's no sudden twist at the end, and it does have a few leaps of faith, but as an enjoyable romantic story of second chances, it hits the spot.

Cross (Season 2)

There's many (more) TV series' adapted from books these days. There's good reason for this because network streaming lends itself to slow-burn storytelling in a way movies don't. Amazon did a great job with James Patterson's Alex Cross first season, and this second adaptation doesn't disappoint.

Precipice

On the verge of World War 1, what would you think was the most taxing question for Britain's Prime Minister? Based on newly released letters and taking historical facts into account, Harris takes us through a duplicitous account of early 20th-century London, matters of state, and matters of the heart.

Send Help

Sam Raimi's new horror flick is a return to form for one of Hollywood's contemporary masters of horror. A great blend of Lost, Lord of the Flies and Office Space.

Hijack (Season 2)

I'm always apprehensive about sequels because expectations can ruin things, can't they? The new season of Hijack defies that trope with layers of story-telling that are as engaging as the twists I didn't see coming.

Small town girl

What if you ended up in a relationship with someone who didn't really exist? Someone who was an undercover cop and who was using you to infiltrate specific groups?
