Archives: Solo Items

Solo activities like books, TV series or films to enjoy in your own company

Hijack

Fancy an edge-of-your-seat thriller that plays out in near real-time? Hijack is another Apple TV mini-series cementing its reputation as a quality producer.

Dark matter

Dark Matter by Dr James Kinross explores the human microbiome and how we cannot live without the millions of microbes that live inside, on, or around us. Fascinating reading.

Deadpool & Wolverine

The MCU found its lost mojo with its latest movie. Full of wise cracks and packed with in-jokes spanning the franchise, this is the tent-pole movie geeks look forward to!

The good fight

I've just caught up with the final season of the highly-rated The Good Fight - a legal drama highlighting the perils and tribulations of woke America. Christine Baranski is a scene stealer throughout the 6 seasons. Available on your favourite streaming platform.

Fast X

It's one of the silliest films of all time with plot holes you could drive a high-octane car chase through. But watching Fast X in 4DX at Cinema City makes it all worthwhile.

Gone girl

Gillian Flynn's award-winning Gone Girl is a not your average whodunnit. A tightly-woven stereotype-flipping thriller, it is a great summer read from one of the great authors of our time.

Ted Lasso

Apple+ consistently delivers high-quality programmes, which is why I've recommended many already. The final season of the feel-good comedy Ted Lasso is now out with a perfect ending for every character arc. Have you watched it yet?

Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse

This highly-rated movie might seem like kids' fare but don't let the title, subject or animation fool you. With influences from Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Bollywood, Leonardo da Vinci, Johnny Rotten - and more - it's one of my favourites of 2023.

Inventing ourselves

Ever wondered about the science of the developing human brain? Billed as a study of teenage brains, this book teaches how we evolve and change. Perfect for understanding that strange teenager at home, or for adding that twist to a business plan.

Suburra

Rome comes across as a gritty, violent and lawless place in the excellent Suburra TV series. Exquisite photography and character-driven plots means you'll be on the edge of your seat for most of this 3 season spectacle. (But don't let this cancel your plans to holiday in the Eternal City! ☺️)
