Right in the middle of Prague’s Old Town Square stands a house where scientists, musicians, and mystics once crossed paths. The portal of the Stone Lamb House contains symbols that hint at a secret world of alchemy. You might walk past without a second glance, but its stones hold centuries of history, from Mozart’s friends to Albert Einstein’s violin sessions.

This article explores the fascinating history of the Stone Lamb House, the mysterious carvings on its facade, and the path of Prague’s alchemists.

A House with Many Names and Owners

The Stone Lamb House, number 17 on Old Town Square, has watched history unfold since the 14th century^{1 2}. At first, this was a Gothic building³, but like many structures in Prague, it changed over the centuries. In the 17th century, builders added a Renaissance gable⁴, to the home of the “White Unicorn” pharmacy^{5 6 7}. The pharmacy operated here from the late 18th century⁸, though historical records show pharmacists working at this location as early as 1429. The building underwent heavy repairs after a fire damaged it during the Prague uprising in May 1945⁹.

Between 1749 and 1766, Antonín Hampacher owned the pharmacy¹⁰. His daughter, Josefina Dušková, was born in the house in 1754. She was a famous soprano singer and a close friend of Mozart¹¹, who visited her during his trips to Prague¹².

Mozart stayed in Prague many times and felt at home here.

Later, from 1884 to 1925, a prominent Jewish pharmacist named Max Fanta owned the building¹³. His wife, Berta Fantová^{14 15}, hosted a famous cultural salon in the rooms above the pharmacy. Before the First World War, people like Kafka and Einstein were regulars here¹⁶. In fact, when Einstein lived in Prague, he would visit the salon to play the violin¹⁷ while Kafka read from his unpublished stories¹⁸. Today, a plaque on the building commemorates Einstein’s time there^{19 20}.

Einstein also lived in Prague and lectured at the university here.

The Mystery of the Stone Lamb

The house gets its primary name from the unusual stone carving above its entrance. The sculpture depicts a shepherdess standing next to an unusual lamb that has a single horn on its head^{21 22}.

Because of this single horn, many people think of it as a unicorn, leading to the building’s alternative name: the House at the White Unicorn^{23 24 25}. In medieval art, artists often depicted unicorns with the features of a goat or a small horse²⁶. The unicorn served as a powerful symbol of innocence, purity, and feminine energy^{27 28}. According to medieval legends, only a pure virgin²⁹ maiden could tame these wild, mythical creatures. It’s why the artist carved a young woman standing beside the animal^{30 31}.

However, the artistic merits of the portal go far beyond the house sign. Around the year 1520, skilled craftsmen carved an elaborate stone entry portal covered in intricate designs^{32 33}. Historians sometimes attribute this masterpiece to Benedikt Ried^{34 35}. Ried was a leading Bohemian medieval architect who built the magnificent Vladislav Hall in Prague Castle^{36 37}.

The portal becomes even more intriguing when we look at the alchemical connections. Alchemy was an early form of science mixed with philosophy and magic. Alchemists tried to transform base metals into gold in their search for eternal life^{38 39}.

The carvings on the portal of the Stone Lamb House are full of alchemical messages about duality and transformation. On the left pillar, you can see a crescent moon and a sun, both with human faces, bound together by ropes⁴⁰. In alchemy, the sun represents gold⁴¹, sulfur, and active⁴² masculine energy, while the moon represents silver⁴³, mercury, and passive⁴⁴ feminine energy. Joining opposing forces together was one of the main goals of the alchemical process and plenty of symbols involve opposites for this reason⁴⁵.

On the right pillar, the carvings show a fool’s face next to a hedgehog in a barrel⁴⁶. It’s harder to understand the significance of these images and most sources suggest ideas, with no clear explanation. It’s worth noting the lines on the columns form an elongated ‘X’, which alchemists used as a sign of transformation⁴⁷.

Following the Alchemical Trail

The Stone Lamb House does not stand alone in its mystical connections; it sits right on Prague’s famous Royal Route. This path leads from the Powder Tower, through Old Town Square, across the Charles Bridge, and up to Prague Castle.

During the late 16th century, Emperor Rudolf II turned Prague into the occult capital of Europe^{48 49} . He was obsessed with finding the Philosopher’s Stone and invited famous alchemists and astronomers to his court⁵⁰.

Because the Emperor lived at Prague Castle, prospective alchemists travelling the Royal Route would leave secret symbols on the buildings where they stayed or worked. These symbols acted as a hidden language for those who knew how to read them.

For example, down the street from the Stone Lamb House, you can find a building called the Black Sun, which represents ‘Nigredo’, the dark, unknown initial stage of the alchemical process^{51 52}. Further along the route, a building displays a White Peacock, symbolising ‘Albedo’, the purifying second stage^{53 54}. The Stone Lamb House, with its symbols of joining the sun and moon, fits into this trail of hidden knowledge.

In 2002, during severe floods, workers discovered a preserved 16th-century alchemy laboratory hidden in a network of underground tunnels near Old Town Square⁵⁵. This discovery, now the Speculum Alchemiae museum, proves that the alchemical symbols on houses like the Stone Lamb were pointing to real, secret experiments happening out of sight⁵⁶.

A Witness to the Square’s Development

The Stone Lamb house is part of the square it forms part of. The Old Town square started in the 10th century as a bustling marketplace at the crossroads of European trade routes⁵⁷.

By the 12th and 13th centuries, wealthy merchants built solid stone houses around the square⁵⁸. Due to flooding from the nearby Vltava river, the city raised the ground level of the square in the 13th century⁵⁹. This substantial increase meant that the original ground floors of these medieval houses became underground cellars⁶⁰. It was around this point that they built the original Stone Lamb house.

In 1338, the city established the Old Town Hall, and in 1410, clockmakers installed the famous Astronomical Clock⁶¹. The square transformed from a simple market into the political and cultural heart of Prague. It witnessed royal coronation processions, grand tournaments, and tragic events like the execution of 27 Czech noblemen in 1621⁶².

The Stone Lamb House grew alongside the square. When it gained its beautiful alchemical portal in 1520⁶³, the square was entering its golden age. In the early 20th century⁶⁴, the square was modernising, with old buildings torn down to create elegant new avenues^{65 66}. Today, the square is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Stone Lamb House stands as a silent witness to a thousand years of history.

Conclusion

The Stone Lamb House is much more than an old building with a strange carving above the door. It is a timeline of Prague’s history carved in stone.

From its days as a medieval pharmacy to its role as a meeting place for brilliant minds, the house has always attracted those seeking knowledge. Its portal reminds us of a time when science and magic walked hand in hand, and its position on the Royal Route connects it to emperors’ grand ambitions.

Next time you find yourself in a historic city, remember to look up. Like the Stone Lamb House, the walls might be trying to tell you a secret.
